Sports Related Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the edges of a toenail grow into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, and swelling. Certain activities, like ballet or football, can increase the risk of developing ingrown toenails. In ballet, the pressure from pointe work can cause the toenails to compress against the shoe, while football players often wear tight cleats that crowd the toes. These tight shoes, combined with repetitive movements, can lead to nail damage and ingrown toenails. Other causes include improper nail trimming such as cutting them too short or rounding the edges, injury, or genetic factors that make the toenails more prone to growing into the skin. If left untreated, ingrown toenails can become infected and lead to more serious complications. Visiting a podiatrist is key to proper diagnosis and treatment. This type of doctor can safely remove the ingrown nail, prevent or treat infection, and offer advice on proper nail care and footwear to avoid recurrence. If you have an ingrown toenail, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Ingrown toenails may initially present themselves as a minor discomfort, but they may progress into an infection in the skin without proper treatment. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of our doctors of Andrea Hyperbaric Wound Care & Health Center. Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are caused when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh surrounding it. They often result in redness, swelling, pain, and in some cases, infection. This condition typically affects the big toe and may recur if it is not treated properly.

Causes

  • Improper toenail trimming
  • Genetics
  • Improper shoe fitting
  • Injury from pedicures or nail picking
  • Abnormal gait
  • Poor hygiene

You are more likely to develop an ingrown toenail if you are obese, have diabetes, arthritis, or have any fungal infection in your nails. Additionally, people who have foot or toe deformities are at a higher risk of developing an ingrown toenail.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of ingrown toenails are redness, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, there may be a yellowish drainage coming from the nail.

Treatment

Ignoring an ingrown toenail can have serious complications. Infections of the nail border can progress to a deeper soft-tissue infection, which can then turn into a bone infection. You should always speak with your podiatrist if you suspect you have an ingrown toenail, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.

Foot Ailments Can Be a Warning Signal

Foot ailments often signal underlying health issues that require attention. Conditions like dry, flaking skin on the feet might suggest fungal infections such as tinea, or could point to dermatitis conditions like eczema or psoriasis that are often linked to stress. Morning foot pain may result from wearing improper footwear or increased physical activity, but persistent pain could indicate more significant problems, like plantar fasciitis or other structural concerns. Cold feet might suggest poor circulation, which can have broader and more serious implications for vascular health. Clawed toes, commonly caused by wearing tight or pointy shoes, can also be associated with nerve damage or improper footwear sizing. Swollen feet, or edema, may result from poor venous circulation, indicating potential vascular or systemic health issues. A podiatrist can address underlying causes and recommend custom orthotics, footwear adjustments, or other treatment to improve your foot health. If you have unexplained foot or ankle issues, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and diagnosis.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our doctors from Andrea Hyperbaric Wound Care & Health Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Ankle Sprains in Athletes

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in athletes, caused by overstretching or tearing the ligaments that stabilize the joint. They often occur during sudden movements like jumping, pivoting, or uneven landings. Each sprain is unique, ranging from mild to severe, depending on the extent of ligament damage. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. Immediate care involves rest, which helps reduce swelling and pain. However, more severe sprains may require medical attention and targeted stretching to ensure proper healing and avoid long-term instability. Prevention strategies include strengthening exercises, ankle taping, wearing supportive footwear, and avoiding risky movements. If you have persistent pain or repeated ankle sprains, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to develop a treatment plan and ensure a safe return to sports.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with one of our doctors from Andrea Hyperbaric Wound Care & Health Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Infantile Blount’s disease, also known as infantile tibia vara, is a growth disorder affecting the shinbone, or tibia, causing it to bow outward below the knee. This condition occurs when the inner part of the tibia fails to develop properly, often due to excessive pressure on the growth plate. It typically affects children under the age of three and is more common in those who are overweight, have early walking milestones, or have a family history of the condition. Orthotics play a vital role in managing infantile Blount’s disease. Custom-made braces or orthotic devices help guide proper bone growth and alignment, reducing the progression of bowing. By promoting proper leg alignment, these devices improve the child’s gait allowing them to walk more comfortably and efficiently while reducing long-term mobility issues. If your child was born with Blount’s disease, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist early on to discuss how orthotics can offer comfort, an improved gait, and better future development.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact one of our doctors from Andrea Hyperbaric Wound Care & Health Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

Types of 5th Metatarsal Fractures

The 5th metatarsal is the bone on the outer edge of the foot that connects the midfoot to the base of the pinky toe. One common injury to the 5th metatarsal is an avulsion fracture, where a tendon pulls off a small piece of bone from its base. It is also known as a pseudo-Jones fracture. This is often caused by a sudden inward roll of the foot during activities like sports or stepping awkwardly. Symptoms of an avulsion fracture include pain, swelling, and bruising on the outside of the foot, and walking may be difficult. A pseudo-Jones fracture is sometimes confused with Jones fractures, which involve a break in the shaft of the fifth metatarsal bone. These two fractures require different treatments. A pseudo-Jones fracture often heals with a walking boot or cast, while Jones fractures may require surgery. A podiatrist can identify the type of fracture through an exam and X-rays in order to recommend the best treatment. If you have injured your 5th metatarsal, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for the appropriate care.

A broken foot requires immediate medical attention and treatment. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our doctors from Andrea Hyperbaric Wound Care & Health Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot typically breaking when bended, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.

Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blue in color
  • Numbness
  • Cold
  • Misshapen
  • Cuts
  • Deformities

Those that suspect they have a broken foot shoot seek urgent medical attention where a medical professional could diagnose the severity.

Treatment for broken bones varies depending on the cause, severity and location. Some will require the use of splints, casts or crutches while others could even involve surgery to repair the broken bones. Personal care includes the use of ice and keeping the foot stabilized and elevated.
